London Fog Umbrella Buying Guide

Umbrellas are bought casually and judged harshly the first windy morning. Four specifications decide whether yours survives.

1. Canopy diameter

Diameter, measured across the open canopy, is the number that determines coverage.

2. Vented double canopy

A vented canopy has an overlapping upper layer that lets gusts pass through instead of inflating the underside. It is the single best predictor of whether an umbrella inverts. If you live somewhere genuinely windy, treat this as non-negotiable and everything else as preference.

3. Frame and ribs

• Eight ribs is the practical standard; more ribs give a rounder canopy and more joints to fail.
• Fibreglass ribs flex and spring back. Steel is stiffer and takes a permanent bend.
• Check the runner (the sliding collar on the shaft) is metal, not brittle plastic.

4. Mechanism and weight

Auto-open is genuinely useful with your hands full. Auto-close saves a second at a car door but is where most cheap umbrellas break. A compact should weigh under about a pound, otherwise it stops living in your bag, which defeats the point.

Matching the umbrella to the coat

If you wear a classic-length trench, a compact is enough because the coat already handles the rain that gets past the canopy. If you wear a short jacket or tailoring without a coat, size up to a full-length stick umbrella; the coverage difference across your legs is significant.

Care

Dry it open or loosely closed, never strapped shut and wet. Wipe grit out of the rib joints occasionally. A drop of light oil on the runner keeps a stiff mechanism moving, and a torn canopy near a rib tip can be patched with repair tape long before it needs replacing.
