A trench coat is bulky, structured and prone to holding creases exactly where you don't want them. These are the methods that work in a real carry-on.
Method 1: the shoulder fold
- Button the coat and lay it face down on a flat surface.
- Turn one shoulder inside out and tuck the other shoulder into it, so the shoulders nest.
- Fold the sleeves flat along the body.
- Fold the coat in half lengthwise, then once more crosswise.
Nesting the shoulders protects the structured part of the coat and keeps the collar from folding flat.
Method 2: roll the liner separately
If your coat has a zip-out liner, remove it. Roll the liner tightly and pack it at the bottom of the case, then fold the shell on top. Two thinner items pack far better than one thick one, and the shell alone creases much less.
Method 3: pack it last, on top
Whatever the fold, the coat goes in last and lies flat across the top of everything else. Packed underneath, it takes the imprint of every hard edge in the case.
Belt and buttons
Tie the belt loosely through the belt loops rather than removing it, so it cannot go missing, and undo the cuff straps so buckles do not press dents into the fabric.
On arrival
- Unpack the coat first and hang it on a broad hanger.
- Steam it in a bathroom during a hot shower for around fifteen minutes.
- Smooth the collar and lapels by hand while the fabric is warm.
- Leave it to hang overnight before wearing it anywhere that matters.
Choosing luggage that helps
A case with a divider panel and compression straps keeps a folded coat flat instead of letting it shift into a wedge. A garment folder is worth the small extra weight if you travel with tailoring regularly.
